Resume of Jack Teegarden, woodcarver
Established full time business as a carver
and maker of North American folk art. Started in March, 1979, in the village
of Sherman, on M-37 in Wexford County, Michigan.
Jack’s carvings and folk art pieces can
be found in private collections in Europe, Canada, Africa, South America
as well as across the USA.
Jack’s teaching experience: Over 2,000
students have taken his courses, and they range in age from 8 to 81 years
old, coming from Alaska to Florida, Ontario to Texas.

Teaches in his own shop in Atlanta, Northeast
Michigan, and taught in his former location in Sherman, near Mesick, in
Northwest Michigan.

Provided enrichment courses for adult education
programs in Gaylord, Lewiston and Mio.

Did a “College for Kids” course at North Central
Michigan College in Petoskey

Taught totem art and totem pole carving at
Delta College in Midland/Bay City/Saginaw.

Visiting artist at Fairview Elementary School
under a National Endowment for the Arts grant.

Lectured on snowshoe making at Central Michigan
University

Presented wood carving for the Michigan Outdoor
Education Association

Appeared on television and on talk radio in
Northern Michigan Judged art shows and wildlife art contests, including
judging the Michigan Duck Stamp contest and judging Great Lakes Wildlife
Art Festival.

Wrote a regular column called “Strictly for
Grandpas” in National Woodlands magazine.

Jack’s work has been featured in many daily
newspapers since 1979, including the Detroit News and Free Press, Grand
Rapids Press, Lansing State Journal, The Saginaw News and others. Magazine
articles have appeared in Michigan Living, Traverse, The Magazine, and
Country Lines.
Jack’s carvings have been featured items at
benefits, auctions and other charities. His work raised $6,000 for St.
Francis Catholic High School, Traverse City, and over $3,000 for Trout
Unlimited, Ruffed Grouse Society, Pheasants Forever, and Ducks Unlimited
chapters in, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.
Wide-ranging discussions are part of the
Teegarden carving experience. Jack holds a B.S. Degree from Heidelberg
College in Tiffin, Ohio, and did a year of graduate studies at Purdue University
before beginning a career in the Boy Scouts of America. He reads a wide
range of topics on the state of the world, nation and the dynamics affecting
America and the environment. Jack has been a lecturer on outdoor
education at Central Michigan University, Purdue University and Michigan
State University.
