Duck Decoy Heads

Instruction/schools/tutorials
Jack Teegarden has developed a considerable
career in making and teaching the art of weathered decoys. He describes
his technique as “capturing the essence without the detail.”
“With the westward expansion of the nation,
duck decoys became an important part of rural life. They were made to be
used, and when one style worked to bring in ducks, there was food on the
table,” Jack says. “Out of that, came decoys that only had the essentials,
and were beautiful in a simple, practical way.”
During his presentation, he explains:
-
that nearly everyone can carve and paint decoys
-
how carving can reduce stress and even become
a second career
-
how hand-carved decoys can become family heirlooms
and items of value
- the process connects with the past, and
preserves a historic skill in America

Teegarden offers full decoy carving
(five-day) courses at his workshop in Northern Michigan. In a rustic setting,
hunting dogs wonder in among the wood shavings, and participants find themselves
going back in time for a few days, when there was a simpler life in rural
America.
These seminars can be one-on-one or tailored
to group needs. Seminar time frames can be five day, three day, or full
day seminars, half-day seminars or shorter presentations. If you are interested

Totem Pole
Carving
Jack Teegarden has had a fascination with
totem poles, what they represent and how they are made, and shares the
knowledge he has collected with participants in a totem pole carving class.
During his seminars, Jack has some totem
poles in various stages of completion and explains the process of carving
one from beginning to end. He talks about North American folklore and the
First Nation People heritage that is represented in totem poles.
During his presentation, he explains how
to select the right kind of log, and the differences between different
kinds of wood in ease of carving, durability outdoors and beauty of the
finished product.
He will take the viewer through various
tools and how each of them has a different purpose. He has a list of seven
things anyone can do to prepare themselves for the pleasure and relaxation
of wood carving.
Jack has a wealth of knowledge of North
American folklore, and talks about the First Nation People heritage and
the cultural and spiritual meaning of totem poles. He talks about
how a hand-carved totem pole can become a family heirloom and a source
of enjoyment to those who see it.
Introductory seminars on totem pole carving
can be tailored to the time frame desired. A full course, in which
the participant finishes a totem pole of their own, would be a five-day
course to start the project, with the carver finishing the project at home,
and a three-day finishing and painting course. |
Each course participant receives
a handout that explains the Teegarden method of totem pole carving.
